Why a magazine?
I started The Fifth Province because I wanted a magazine that brought together the best literature, history, art, music, and ideas. Something with depth, beautifully made, and genuinely enjoyable to read over a Saturday morning coffee.
Each issue explores a different theme through essays, interviews, photography, criticism and visual art. We're interested in the connections between culture and everyday life, the ideas that shape us, and the things that make life meaningful.
We champion established experts and emerging creative voices, with a commitment to giving good writers and artists a platform.
In an increasingly digital world, we're making something tangible, a magazine to keep, return to, and share. We want a magazine that challenges and inspires as it educates. We believe there's still room for curiosity, depth, wit and genuine conversation.

In Irish folklore, the Fifth Province was an imagined territory beyond the four traditional provinces of Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Traditionally associated with Mide, at the centre of the island, it was a meeting place: a place where rulers could gather and disputes were settled.
The Fifth Province magazine is an imagined place beyond the boundaries of the four traditional provinces: a place for conversation, culture and ideas.
FOUNDER & EDITOR
Mary Hatfield is a historian by trade whose work has appeared with Oxford University Press and Liverpool University Press. She has held fellowships at Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and the University of Oxford.
She likes books, coffee, pints, and talking to interesting people, preferably in that order.
